Fracture asperity evolution during the transition from stick slip to stable sliding

چکیده
Fracture asperities interlock or break during stick slip and ride over each other stable sliding. The evolution of fracture the transition between sliding has attracted less attention, but is important to predict behaviour. Here, we conduct a series direct shear experiments on simulated fractures in homogeneous polycarbonate examine stage. Our results show that stage occurs stages progressive reduction normal stress smooth rough fractures. Both exhibit alternative occurrence small large drops followed by deterministic chaos data indicate asperity radius curvature correlates linearly with dimensionless contact area under given stress. For fracture, bifurcation acoustic energy release appears when decreases stress-dependent velocity-dependent. This article part theme issue ‘Fracture dynamics solid materials: from particles globe’.

Transition from stick-slip to smooth sliding: an earthquakelike model.
We present a detailed study of an earthquakelike model that exhibits a "transition" from stick-slip motion to smooth sliding at a velocity of the order of those observed in experiments. This contrasts with the many previous microscopic models in which the transition velocity is many orders of magnitude too large. The results show that experimentally observed smooth sliding at the macroscopic sc...
متن کاملMicromechanics of asperity rupture during laboratory stick slip experiments
[1] Acoustic emissions and tremor‐like signals are widely recorded in laboratory experiments. We are able to isolate the physical origins of these signals using high resolution nanoseismic analysis. The use of a picometer‐sensitive, wide‐band sensor array permits us to determine force‐time functions and focal mechanisms for discrete events found amid the “noise” of friction, similar to how low ...

We explore the nature of the transitions between stick slip and steady sliding in models for boundary lubrication introduced in J. M. Carlson and A. A. Batista, Phys. Rev. E 53, 4153 ~1996!. The models are based on the rate and state approach which has been very successful in characterizing the behavior of dry interfaces @A. Ruina, J. Geophys. Res. 88, 10 359 ~1983!#. Our models capture the key...
متن کاملStick-Slip to Sliding Transition of Dynamic Contact Lines under AC Electrowetting.
We show that at low velocities the dynamics of a contact line of a water drop moving over a Teflon-like surface under ac electrowetting must be described as stick-slip motion, rather than one continuous movement. At high velocities we observe a transition to a slipping regime. In the slipping regime the observed dependence of the contact angle is well described by a linearization of both the hy...
متن کاملFracture and friction: Stick-slip motion.
We discuss the stick-slip motion of an elastic block sliding along a rigid substrate. We argue that for a given external shear stress this system shows a discontinuous nonequilibrium transition from a uniform stick state to uniform sliding at some critical stress which is nothing but the Griffith threshold for crack propagation. An inhomogeneous mode of sliding occurs when the driving velocity ...
